Hot water: many kWh!
This is how we calculated energy usage for hot water
Prices water
3.50 CHF / € / US$ per m3 (1’000 Liter) drinking- and waste water
Preise Energie
0.18 CHF / € / US$ per kWh energy
0.50 CHF / € / US$ per liter heating oil

Showering for one year without watersaving showerhead corresponds to driving 2'000 km in a car
- A classic shower head uses 15 - 25 l/min.
- Showering for 5 minutes at an average of 18 l/min = 90 litres of water
- Heating 1 liter of water to 40 degreees uses 0.0349 kWh (source: good old school):
- to heat 1 kg = 1 liter of water for 1 degree celsius, 1 kilo calory is necessary (kcal).
- 1 kcal = 0.001163 kWh, therefore:
- the difference between 10 and 40 degress celsius = 30° x 0.001163 = 0.0349 kWh
- 90 liters of water require to heat up to 40° (per liter: 0.0349 kWh): 3.09 kWh
- The calorific value of 1 liter of gasoline is approx. 8.9 kWh (Wikipedia)
- So, 3.09 kWh correspond to 3.5 dl of gasoline
- and showering one week at 5 minutes per shower = 7 days x 0.35 l = 2.43 litres of gasoline = 40 km with a car at 6 l of gasoline per 100 km
A 5 minute shower requires 3 dl of heating oil!
- Classic shower: 16 l/min
- One shower at 5 minutes at 18 l/min = 90 liters of water
- Heating 1 l Wasser to 40° requires 0.0349 kWh
- 90 l of water require to be heaten at 0.0349 kwh: 3.09 kWh
- The calorific value of 1 liter of heating oil (Wikipedia) is approx: 11 kWh/kg
- So: 3.09 kWh = 0.3 l heating oil = 3 dl of heating Heizöl
Washing your hands for a month without AquaClic requires 2.5 liters of heating oil! An unregulated faucet uses 10 - 15 l/min.
- Washing your hands for 2 minutes at 12 l/min = 24 liters of water per day = 720 l/month
- Heating 1 liter of water to 40 degress Celsius requires 0.0349 kWh
- 720 litres of water require to be heaten at 0.0349 kWh: 24.7 kWh
- One liter of heating oil has a calorific value of approx. 10 kWh (source)
24.7 kWh = 2.5 liters of heating oil to wash your hands for 1 month |
